Landmark Project in Malta

A groundbreaking project is complete and another beautiful structure is added to our portfolio.   We successfully supplied a pioneering structure for Esplora, Malta’s National Interactive Science Centre.

“It was a terrific challenge to create such curvatures with our Freedome® technology", said Francisco Castaño, CEO of Geometrica.

DTR architects of Malta dramatically transformed a former naval hospital, unused and in disrepair for many years, into a stunning, hands-on, learning facility. Like a soft cloth, the Geometrica structure nests a planetarium sphere in the center. Using single layer geometry, our aluminum tubes and connectors were shaped to smoothly cover an area of 5800 sq. ft. with a random arrangement of supports and edge conditions.

“I would like to thank Pillow Space Frame for their confidence and great cooperation throughout the project, and our project team for executing and delivering such a successful project.  We are proud to be part of such a extraordinary installation and to work with the professionals at PSF”, said Castaño.

Poised to become a landmark attraction in Malta, Esplora is located on the Grand Harbor in Villa Bighi.  On January 28th, a grand opening event was held under the patronage of Her Excellency Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Malta.

Geometrica’s scope of work included design, fabrication, supply, delivery and on-site installation guidance. Pillow Space Frame, Geometrica’s client on this project, designed and supplied the planetarium sphere with curved glass cladding and installed the Geometrica Freedome.
